Climate change is a critical issue for our planet and one of the most urgent challenges facing society today. The chemical sector, including Chemours, plays a central and complex role in the transition to a low-carbon economy due to the current and future demand for chemicals that enable low-carbon and energy-saving technologies. As the sector grows to meet this need, it must do so while reducing its own emissions.

Our 2023 Actions

Implemented a centralized data management system to further simplify and streamline our data management process for sites that comprise approximately 90% of our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
Realized a 3.9% energy efficiency improvement since 2022 through company-wide implementation of over 60 individual projects
Partnered on the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2)—one of the seven hydrogen hubs selected for funding by the U.S. Department of Energy

Continuing our Journey to Net Zero

We have established a decarbonization roadmap that incorporates planned energy efficiency improvement, renewable electricity, and process emissions reductions. This roadmap includes charter teams to identify new decarbonization levers, such as electrification and renewable thermal energy. Responsible manufacturing is at the heart of our approach in our own operations and in our work with our suppliers and customers. We are committed to reducing Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions, including air process emissions from fluorinated organic chemicals (FOCs), by improving our resource use, increasing energy efficiency, deploying lower-emission technologies at manufacturing sites, and increasing use of renewable electricity. In 2023, we made progress reducing GHG emissions largely due to targeted emissions- reduction initiatives completed in 2022 and improved operational efficiencies at several of our Thermal & Specialized Solutions and Advanced Performance Materials manufacturing sites.

Transitioning to Renewable Energy Sources

Our path to reduce GHG emissions includes not only reducing energy used in our operations, but also transitioning to renewable energy sources where feasible. We have secured renewable electricity solutions at our sites in Mechelen, Belgium; Dordrecht, the Netherlands; Louisville, Kentucky; Starke, Florida; New Johnsonville, Tennessee; and Belle, West Virginia. The first full year of benefits was realized in 2023. Overall, by year-end 2023, we committed to procure approximately 380,000 MWh per year of renewable power.

Products to Help Avoid Emissions

Chemours is committed to developing products and processes that offer emissions reductions benefits to our customers by providing market options for select products with lower GHG footprints. We calculate the avoided emissions benefits from using our products based on sales of our low global warming potential (GWP) Opteon™ hydrofluoroolefin refrigerants. In 2023, Opteon™ sales helped prevent 36 million MT of CO2 emissions from being released to the atmosphere by replacing refrigerants with much higher GWPs.

Improving Another Vital Shared Resource – Air

We continue to make progress in reducing air FOC process emissions, with 14 active projects underway globally. We also continue to evaluate the effectiveness of our air FOC process emissions-abatement work through direct measurement and refined engineering estimates of air process emissions sources and tracking emissions annually as we progress mitigation programs. We remain on track to achieving our goal to reduce all air FOC process emissions by 99% or greater, independent of GHG GWP, in response to feedback from our local stakeholders.

Partnering for Progress

Advancing Clean Hydrogen

For the past two years, Chemours has been a project partner in the ARCH2 hydrogen hub, in collaboration with West Virginia and states such as Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky, across the Northern Appalachian region, as well as a group of corporate, non-profit, academic, and research partners. The ARCH2 hydrogen hub is in response to the U.S. Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hydrogen Shot, which establishes a framework and foundation for clean hydrogen deployment. As part of ARCH2 and in collaboration with partners, we are looking to develop water electrolysis-based clean hydrogen facilities in West Virginia near our manufacturing sites and to explore how we can use hydrogen to further decarbonize our operations.
