WILMINGTON, Del., – Chemours was recognized with the award for Best Blowing Agent Technical Presentation at this year’s Polyurethane’s Technical Conference (CPI), sponsored by the American Chemistry Council. This year’s conference, held in October in Orlando, Fla., had more than 1000 attendees, making it the highest attended conference in the last five years.
While numerous technical papers were presented at the event, a presentation on Formacel™ 1100 (FEA-1100) was chosen as the best because it illustrated the product’s value across all three major industry concerns: environmental sustainability, energy efficiency and ease of transition. The presentation highlighted the low global warming potential (GWP) of Formacel™ 1100, and gave examples of how it can be used across a variety of applications such as appliance, pour-in-place, spray, and PIR boardstock. The paper also highlighted the most recent studies by Chemours on refrigerator liner compatibility and Formacel™1100 usage level optimization. The paper was presented by Gary Loh, a global technical service consultant for Chemours.
Formacel™ 1100 is an HFO-based foam expansion agent (FEA) that offers excellent environmental properties in a near-drop-in replacement for HCFC-141b and HFC-245fa systems. Formacel™ 1100 is differentiated from other FEA’s in that it has zero ODP (no chlorine) and low GWP (<2), while still helping to meet the critical needs of the industry. These needs include being non-VOC and nonflammable, as well as maintaining a suitable boiling point and low vapor thermal conductivity. Formacel™ 1100 also offers excellent thermal insulation performance allowing for reduced energy consumption, which further reduces greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, Formacel™ 1100 offers superior stability and customers have demonstrated an extended shelf life of 12 months.
“Our customers have told us that Formacel™ 1100 provides a near drop-in foam expansion agent for their current formulations,” said Helen Walter-Terrinoni, global foam expansion agent market leader. “Due to its ease of transition and superior stability, Formacel™ 1100 helps give foam formulators and users the confidence they need to begin to switch to new low GWP solutions that are not only better for the environment, but also better for their product’s performance.”
“This highly prestigious award is a clear indication of the polyurethane industry’s recognition of Formacel™ 1100’s ability to help meet and exceed the regulatory and sustainability demands facing foam formulators” said Diego Boeri, global business director, Chemours Fluorochemicals. “This product will not only allow formulators to meet these requirements by reducing GWP, it will also help improve energy efficiency, further reducing the climate change impact.”
As the leading industry supplier of more environmentally sustainable foams, refrigerants and aerosol propellants, Chemours has invested hundreds of millions of dollars to bring to the market new products with no ozone depletion and low global warming potential. The company and its suppliers have plans to invest hundreds of millions more in the next five years to bring online
additional capacity of these more sustainable, high-performance products that serve a wide range of applications.
